Tequila – a beloved spirit

Tequila, a beloved spirit originating from the blue agave plant in the region surrounding Tequila, Mexico, boasts a rich history and unique production process. Crafted exclusively in specific areas of Mexico, true tequila must adhere to strict regulations to earn its name.

Known for its distinct flavour profile, which varies from earthy and sweet in Blanco to rich and complex in Añejo, tequila is a versatile spirit enjoyed in myriad ways. Whether sipped neat, mixed in classic cocktails like the Margarita, or infused with modern twists, tequila’s allure lies in its deep connection to Mexican culture and its ability to deliver both a refined and vibrant drinking experience.

Tequila has long been a standout in the agave spirits segment, celebrated for its unique raw material, compelling stories, distinctive character, and widespread availability. Despite these strengths, the category’s growth has lagged behind other spirits for various reasons.

Tequila comes in several variations based on its ageing process. Freshly distilled tequila, known as Blanco or Silver Tequila, is a clear, light spirit primarily used in cocktails. When aged in oak barrels for two to twelve months, it is called Reposado, meaning “rested.” Tequila aged for one to three years is referred to as Añejo, while tequila aged for over three years earns the designation Extra Añejo.

Tequila’s versatility allows it to be enjoyed in various ways. It can be mixed with soda for a refreshing drink, while Añejo and Extra Añejo tequilas are often sipped like whiskey, either neat or on the rocks.

The rich history, meticulous craftsmanship, and the agave-growing regions of Mexico imbue tequila with a mystique and allure that captivates consumers. A lesser-known fact is that just as genuine champagne can only come from a specific region in France, true tequila can only be produced in certain districts of Mexico.
