Although sacred Mahakumbh occurs every 12 years, this year it holds a special significance. The Mahakumbh 2025 marks the completion of a cycle of 12 full Mahakumbhs thus completing 144 years.
A Celebration of Faith and Unity
The grand Mahakumbh 2025 began on January 13, 2025, at the sacred Sangam in Prayagraj, showcasing spirituality and India’s rich cultural heritage. Rooted in Sanatan Dharma, the festival highlights unity, self-discovery, and the enduring legacy of faith. Running until February 26, 2025, it is set to welcome a staggering 40 crore visitors from around the globe.
The first Amrit Snan, held on January 14 (Makar Sankranti), saw 3.5 crore devotees take a sacred dip in the holy confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers, symbolising purification. Two more Amrit Snans on January 29 and February 3 further emphasise spiritual renewal.
Pilgrims coming from countries like Israel, Russia, and Peru and across the world reflect Mahakumbh’s universal appeal. Mahakumbh embodies “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (The world is one family), fostering unity, cultural exchange, and spiritual transcendence.
UP Government’s MAHA-Plan for MAHAKUMBH 2025
The Uttar Pradesh government has made extensive preparations for the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj, which is expected to attract over 40 crore visitors.
● Infrastructure Development: The area is equipped with essential utilities, including water, sewage, and electrical lines. Additionally, 30 temporary pontoon bridges have been constructed to facilitate movement.
● Transportation Enhancements: Indian Railways has introduced sufficient special trains to manage the influx of visitors.
● Healthcare Services: A temporary hospital capable of handling up to 200 patients at a time has been set up to provide medical care during the festival. This facility is staffed with healthcare professionals to address any medical emergencies.
● Sanitation Measures: Approximately 10,000 sanitation workers have been deployed to maintain cleanliness throughout the event. Under the Swachh Kumbh initiative, around 150,000 toilets and urinals have been installed in the Mela area. A QR code-based monitoring system is being launched to track sanitation levels in toilets.
● Security Arrangements: A robust security framework has been implemented, with 40,000 police officers and AI-equipped surveillance cameras ensuring the safety of attendees. This includes crowd management and real-time monitoring to prevent any untoward incidents.
● Technological Integration: The “Kumbh Sah’AI’yak” AI-powered chatbot has been introduced to assist pilgrims with information on the festival’s history, travel guidance, key attractions, and accommodation planning. This service is available in multiple Indian languages and can be accessed via WhatsApp, the Mahakumbh 2025 mobile app, and the official website.
The Grand Tent City at Mahakumbh
The Uttar Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (UPSTDC) has established a mega “tent city” at strategic locations including Arail Ghat, Parade Ground, and Jhunsi, with 2,000 tents of various categories to accommodate the massive influx of pilgrims and travellers.
