Art aficionados can appreciate over four-thousand indispensable artworks at the iconic Taj hotels
Beyond aesthetics, the art portfolio of Taj Hotels boasts an enormous collection of over four thousand artworks with over a hundred museum-quality masterworks.
The art collection at Taj details the progression of the Modern Art Movement from the mid-1960s until the early 1980s. A medley of precious artworks at The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, reflects an important era of creativity in Indian history. Significant works, acquired from 1968 to the 1970s, feature artists working in India in the post-independence era, such as MF Husain, SH Raza, Jamini Roy, Tyeb Mehta, KH Ara, Jehangir Sabavala, Bose Krishnamachari, VS Gaitonde and others. In recent times, three works of VS Gaitonde from the hotel were lent to the Guggenheim Museum for an exhibition in New York and Venice.
Continuing the legacy of The Taj Mahal Palace, additions were made to the existing collection by acquiring the works of young and emerging artists. The masterpieces by MF Husain, Krishen Khanna, Akbar Padamsee, Prafulla Dahanukar and Ganesh Haloi in The Pierre reflect the New York hotel’s Indian heritage. The self-exiled Polish artist Stefan Norblin’s works at the iconic Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur, and the wall frescos by French artist Jean Gaudier at Taj Falaknuma Palace, Hyderabad, echo the best of Indian and Western art at Taj.
These great works of art across Taj hotels stand as a testament to the changing patterns of history. Experience Taj’s iconic art collections with a guided tour of its hotels.
