Arunachal Pradesh’s Rich Cultural Tapestry

In addition to its natural beauty, Arunachal Pradesh boasts a rich cultural heritage. The state is home to numerous indigenous tribes, each with its unique traditions, languages, and customs. Exploring the cultural diversity of Arunachal Pradesh can help children understand the importance of preserving and respecting different cultures. It also provides an opportunity for parents to teach their children about social responsibility and the value of community.

Our family trip to Arunachal Pradesh was an unforgettable adventure, especially for our 7-year-old son, Vihaan. In the lush valleys of Arunachal Pradesh, nestled amidst the rugged terrain, lies a place called Dong. Its claim to fame? Being the receiver of the first sun rays in India. When we stumbled upon this enchanting destination, my husband and I knew we had to share this momentous experience with our child.

Named after the Sanskrit word for “first ray of the Sun,” Vihaan embodied the spirit of adventure and curiosity. So, with eager hearts and sturdy hiking boots, we embarked on a journey to trek the Dong Mountain, where the sunrise spectacle awaited us.

As we ascended higher, gruelling three hours to reach to the top, the air grew crisper, the scenery more breathtaking. Falling asleep under a blanket of stars, serenaded by the gentle rustle of the wind through the trees.

And then it happened. The horizon blazed with hues of gold and orange as the sun peeked over the distant mountains, casting its warm embrace upon the land. Vihaan stood mesmerized, his eyes wide with wonder, as he witnessed the true meaning of his name unfolding before him. For us, as parents, it was a moment of pure joy and fulfilment. To not just tell Vihaan about the significance of his name, but to let him experience it firsthand, was the greatest gift we could ever give him.

Another enriching part of our journey was our interaction with the Apatani tribe of Ziro. Known for their distinctive facial tattoos and nose plugs, the Apatani people have preserved their unique cultural practices for generations. Vihaan was fascinated by their traditional way of life and keenly observed their daily routines, which are so different from our own.

The Apatani community welcomed us with open arms, offering us a glimpse into their customs and traditions. The interplay between the boundless curiosity of a child and the deep adoration of old age formed a timeless connection.

Arunachal Pradesh is vast, and planning an adventure requires choosing the right destinations.
